What the chart shows
- Contents: the minimum quantity of each item in a small, medium and large BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026 workplace kit. The full guide is BS 8599-1 first aid kit sizes explained.
- Which size: based on the most people in one area on a shift, and whether the work is low or high risk. Use the first aid calculator to work it out for your site.
- Minimums only: your first aid needs assessment may call for more, or for extras such as burns kits, eyewash or a defibrillator. Kitchens need blue detectable plasters; see kitchen first aid kit contents.
- Updated for 2026: the April 2026 amendment (BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026) adds guidance on defibrillators, burns kits and eyewash kits. See what changed in the 2026 amendment.
- Keep it stocked: check kits monthly and replace anything used or out of date. See first aid kit expiry dates.
